new decor can't make up for awful experience
The food is decent (3-star) but overpriced for what you get. service is absolutely horrible. worst in town. miss the feel of the old union. it seems like they subscribe to the philosophy that if you call it gay you can charge too much, provide lousy service & have attitude. that may have been the case 10 years ago but thankfully, gay people now have more choices. the only nice thing i can say about the place is the patio.
They sucked all the fun out of it...
The old Union was really a place where you could go with your friends and consistently have a great time with the music, funny videos, strong drinks, etc. The drinks are still strong only now it takes 15 minutes to get one rather than the 10 minutes I had finally learned to accept as a necessary evil. The help is staggeringly bad, and the food is overpriced (though not bad at all), and all the cute boys have morphed into 40-something couples. This is okay for a chill weekday night but no longer a place where you want to start your night out...
Really bad service... Nice Patio
I can’t believe how bad the service has been since they have opened the new place. It seems that the servers just can’t get it together. I have on several occasions watched my drink sit on the bar for ten to twenty minutes until the server has finally brought it to me. I have seen two or three servers running all over the place while several have been chatting with each other at the bar. Servers seem to have tables all over the place rather then in a concentrated area, often running from outside to inside. I just don’t understand the chaos that ensues. Most of these servers worked at Union Station but just can’t seem to figure out what to do at the new place. And the new hostess could not be any more unpleasant if she tried. I will still go for drinks on the patio when it is nice out, but I will never try to eat here again.
They need to add zero stars to the rating system
Food - who said hotel food? They were being nice, it is hospital food. Appleby's, but more expensive (I didn't steel that, great minds just think alike). $50 + tip for lunch? And not a good one at that. The person who gave them 5 chances must have had a lobotomy (or missed the old place and really wanted to give them a chance). Union Station was an institution in Columbus ... there goes the neighborhood.
Newer, posh, drastically improved.
Highly recommend the new and improved Union Bar + Food. Always packed and always a stiff drink. $3 Long Island Thursdays are especially fun. Try the chicken satay appetizer (only $5 during Happy Hour) or crab cakes. Also recommended: Diablo Pasta and Club Sandwich.
